Day 01: Cusco to Pilcopata: Beginning Your Manu National Park tour expedition

The journey begins very early, leaving Cusco behind as you travel along the famousManu Road, which ranks among the best drives in all of Peru, and certainly for validreasons. Within several short hours, you will move from high Andean lands to the border of the Amazon Basin, observing how the view changes nearly every singlemoment. As the path rises toward Paucartambo, the arid Andean ground graduallyturns into foggy valleys and dense plant growth. 

During the route, we pause at the Chullpas of Ninamarca, ancient burial towers that provide a calm, powerful look atcultures living in these hills long before the Incas came. From here, going down into Manu truly feels distinct. This part of cloud forest is recognized globally for its birds,and it is simple to understand why. Look upward carefully and you may find trogons, tanagers, and motmots flying inside the canopy. 

Should fortune smile on you, you will see the Cock of the Rock, Perus national bird, and one of the most beautiful you could meet, featuring vivid orange feathers and dramatic mating shows. At this stage, the trip no longer feels like driving but rather arriving, since the air becomes thicker,noises shift, and the forest reveals itself clearly before sight meets it. Day 02: Pilcopata – Atalaya Lodge – Manu Amazon Rainforest Entrance.

Having had breakfast, we head off to the riverside town named Atalaya Port, the starting point of our journey along the Manu River. The trip is full of amazing landscapes and many opportunities for wildlife watching.

On the way, we visit the local coca plantation to get familiar with the local farm culture which has been preserved through generations. We also will visit a rescue center which houses the local wildlife. There are plenty of bird species in this place, hence visitors may see herons, egrets, kingfishers, and if one gets lucky the King Vulture.

In Atalaya Port, we leave the car behind and proceed to board a boat to travel along the Manu River in a relaxing voyage among the jungle on the river banks.

In the afternoon we arrive at our destination lodge, situated deep inside the rainforest. Having settled down in the lodge, we prepare for the highlight of the day – a night excursions to watch caimans on the river banks. The eyes of caimans glow faintly in the dark, while all around in the jungle there goes on life unusual for the daytime. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 03: Manu Amazon Expedition – River Safari, Wildlife, and Natural Hot Springs.

After breakfast, we will head upstream on our boat through the Manu River, taking us to one of the most untouched areas in the Amazon basin. Boat travel allows us the privilege of seeing this amazing environment from up close, something that not many people manage to do.

On your journey, you may be able to see river otters, turtles, and capybaras lounging by the water edge in their natural habitat.

As soon as we turn around every corner, we get a chance to see even more amazing sites like the dense jungles and forests that have not been touched yet. All of the sounds of water, calls, and blowing leaves will create an atmosphere of the jungle for you.

In the afternoon hours, we will arrive at the hot springs where we will be able to relax in the pools while admiring the great scenery. Later on, we will pay a visit to the area around the Otorongo Lake, which is an oxbow lake and very famous for its ecology and scenery. Climbing up to the observation tower in this area will give us an insight into the efforts of this specific region of Manu.

Our boat ride will take about three hours in total.

Day 04: Jungle Hike to Machu Wasy Lake – Discover the Heart of the Amazon Rainforest

The day starts with a delicious breakfast at Amazon Manu Lodge, after which you’ll set off for another exciting river trip. While you travel along the river, you’ll be able to appreciate once again the beauty of Manu National Park, one of the most diverse natural parks in the world.

Every turn will reveal some new surprises for you: rainforest trees, lush vegetation and numerous sounds will create a special atmosphere. Together with your naturalist guide you’ll be able to discover the different species of wildlife that are living in this place: different kinds of birds, sitting in the tree tops or playing in the branches, curious monkeys that live and move among the tops of trees. Even if there is no visible wildlife around you’ll still be surrounded with the sounds of birds and other animals living in the rainforest.

You will head back to the lodge, have a rest after eating your lunch, and then travel to the Machu Wasy Lake, an exquisite oxbow lake located in the midst of the pristine rainforest. The tranquil environment will enable you to spend some time in this area of Amazon and enjoy the reflection of the forest in the still waters.

During the tour around the place, your guide will inform you more about the life of this incredible ecosystem and will tell about the connections between the plants, insects, birds and mammals that inhabit this rainforest.

Look out for macaws and parrots in the treetops that can even be seen flying over or in the adjacent forests. Although this is not always guaranteed, jaguars, the biggest predators in the Amazon rainforest and among the most remarkable animals, can also be seen there.

At the end of the day, you will return to Amazon Manu Lodge where you will spend the night at the lodge eating dinner and using all amenities.

Day 05: Return to Cusco – A Scenic Farewell to Manu National Park

On the final day, the day starts early as you bid farewell to the serene environment of Amazon Manu Lodge and start the journey to Cusco. Traveling by vehicle to the Port of Atalaya, you will travel along part of the way that initially took you to the depths of the Amazon, appreciating once again the unique landscapes of southeast Peru.

However, the landscape changes gradually, when leaving the tropical rainforest behind and climbing to the Andes. Soon, you will see mist-covered mountain ranges, beautiful winding valleys, amazing panoramas and breathtaking views, which show all the beauty of this part of Cusco region. Such a transformation is yet another good illustration of how rapidly and diversely Peru can impress its visitors with natural scenery.

Throughout your way back, your guide will keep telling you more stories and facts about the rich biodiversity of the region, the way climate and geographic factors affect flora and fauna, which exists between the Amazon Basin and Andean mountains. You will have some time to think about the experience you gained during your stay in Manu region and reflect upon the whole trip.

You will have time to make breaks along the route and see the spectacular landscapes.

In the late afternoon or evening, you will get back to Cusco, ending your fantastic trip to the area, which is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Despite the end of the trip, the memories about the pristine rainforest of Manu, about rich wildlife and amazing landscapes will stay in your mind forever.

The expedition team carries a full first-aid kit along with established safety protocols suited for remote areas. Rubber boots are also provided for navigating the humid terrain of the primary rainforest.

Initial and Final Meals

The first breakfast on the day of departure and dinner on the final day after arriving back in Cusco are not included.

Drinks and Additional Consumptions

The meals are covered through the entire excursion, but there are some personal drinks and additional consumptions which are not covered in the package. Soft drinks, bottled juices, alcohol drinks, and other additional drinks besides the provided meals should be paid separately during the trip.

It would be wise to have some local money, since there might be some places on the route where you can buy snacks or drinks, especially those close to riversides or other local communities.

Travel Insurance

Manu is a distant place, where nature is the key element of the tour. In such manner, it is necessary for each passenger to have travel insurance covering international activities, assistance, and even cancellations of the trip.

Packing List for Your Wonderful Manu Experience (5 days / 4 nights)

Preparing for Manu requires you to pack for one of the most varied experiences in Peru. In a matter of days, you will move from the cold heights of the Andes to the humid rainforest of the Amazon, traversing the cloud forest and mountain valleys in between.

As you will face so much change in the weather during your trip, it is essential to pack clothes that you can layer and equipment that is appropriate for mountain terrain and rainforest exploration. Rain is possible at any time of the year, humidity is constant in the rainforest, and there are boat trips and nature hikes involved each day.

What to Bring with You?

Documents and Personal Essentials

Passport (Original)
The original passport is necessary for park registration and checkpoints on the way. It should be stored inside a waterproof pouch or dry bag to protect from moisture.

Cash (Peruvian Soles)
It is always good to bring some cash just in case you need it for personal expenses like snacks, drinks, or gifts. There are no possibilities to pay by cards in distant places.

Travel Insurance
Print out or save on your device information about your travel insurance. As you’ll visit a distant area, it is better to have all the information with you.

Personal Medication
In case if you use medications, it is advisable to bring a supply for the whole trip, as well as the essentials that you might need. The medical help and pharmacies are practically absent in the Manu region.

Clothing: From the Andes to the Amazon

Warm Jacket or Fleece
You start the adventure in the Andes, and mornings there are cold. So you’ll need a jacket or a fleece to feel comfortable until you get into the tropics.

Long-Sleeved T-shirts (4–5 pieces)
Lightweight breathable long-sleeved t-shirts are perfect for the rainforest, because they will save you from sunburns and reduce the number of insect bites. Light-colored clothes is preferable, because they are cooler and less attracting for insects.

Lightweight Trekking Pants (3 pieces)
Quick-drying hiking pants are more comfortable than jeans in the jungle climate. They dry quickly, breathe and are great for walking.

Rain Jacket or Waterproof Poncho
Rain is possible any time of the year, including the dry season. Therefore, the waterproof layer is needed for trips by boat and jungle walks.

Swimsuit
It would be nice to bring a swimsuit to make a bath in one of the hot springs or do other water activities planned in your program.

Extra Socks
Hiking socks, which can absorb sweat and will keep your feet dry, will make walking easier and more comfortable for you.

Footwear

Waterproof Hiking Boots
Comfy hiking boots that have a good grip on slippery surfaces are among the most vital things that you will pack.

Sandals or Lightweight Shoes
It’s convenient to put on something more lightweight and comfy around the lodge when hiking boots are drying up after a long day of exploration.

Rubber Boots
Rubber boots are usually easy to get locally if the weather on the trails becomes really muddy. Anyway, we strongly recommend taking your own hiking boots for additional comfort.

Wildlife & Adventure Gear

Binoculars (Highly Recommended)
Manu wildlife tends to stay up high in the trees. Having binoculars will significantly increase your chances to see monkeys, macaws, toucans, parrots, and amazing Andean Cock-of-the-Rock.

Headlamp or Flashlight
There is a lot happening in the rainforest after dark time. Headlamp will be very useful for exploring at night, walking around the lodge, and observing nocturnal wildlife.

Daypack (25-30L)
This backpack will be very comfortable for carrying all your necessary items such as water, camera, rain protection, sunscreen, and other items on your daily excursions.

Dry Bags
It will protect all your electronics, passport, camera, and other valuable things from getting wet while riding boats.

Power Bank
There might be no electricity available in some rainforest lodges during limited hours. Power bank will be very helpful for charging your smartphone and camera.

Health and Personal Care

Insect Repellent (30-50% DEET)
Insects are endemic to the Amazon forest habitat.
The use of insect repellent before walking and boat trips will keep you comfortable.

Sunscreen (SPF 50+), Lip balm
The tropical sun is quite harsh on many visitors, particularly during boat tours where little or no shade is provided.

Personal Hygiene

Items that can be packed in travel sizes include:

Travel Tips from the Southern Peru Explorers

In preparation for this tour, we suggest bringing your clothes packed in a mid-size duffel bag that is waterproof.

The space is limited during the river transfers and therefore softer luggage is much easier to move around during the whole tour. All extra luggage that you do not need in the rainforest can be kept safe at our office in Cusco until your return.

Last but not least, do not forget that you will finish your tour in the Andes, where it is much colder than in the jungle. Therefore, having a sweater or a light jacket at hand would definitely help you to have the last day of your tour pleasant and warm.
